Tamworth, Staffordshire

Bellway successfully promoted this land through the Local Plan and received an allocation for new homes, a new retail centre, extra future parking provision for the existing train station, plus a new pedestrian and cycle way via a new bridge across the East Coast main railway line.

The site was identified by our Strategic Land team as a sustainable location on the edge of the existing town, in close proximity to the existing railway station, local facilities, and various services offered in and around the town centre.

Bellway helped facilitate the delivery of a local centre, including a primary school and shop, as well as a bridge over the railway line, which involved detailed negotiation with Network Rail. The bridge was constructed within a strict night-time window to avoid any significant disruption to daytime railway operation.

Initially, the local highways authority had suggested that a new link road was required. However, over time, Bellway proved that this was not feasible and that other more sustainable measures could and should be put in place, improving value delivery for the landowner.

Through working with other developers and landowners in the locality, Bellway delivered a comprehensive design solution, and the development is now a thriving new community on the edge of Tamworth in the West Midlands.
